Multicultural Communities

Some people devote their volunteering efforts to working with refugees or migrants. Volunteers may be community members who have a commitment to making newcomers to Australia feel welcome and supported. Or they may themselves be migrants, who now wish to use their experience in settling into Australia to guide others.

Opportunities exist for volunteers to help new settlers become familiar with their local area, improve their English skills, and participate in arts and sporting activities. Volunteers also provide valuable support to people from culturally diverse backgrounds in the areas of aged and disability care, community services, and community language education.

The Community Relations Commission (CRC) links volunteers to community organisations, neighbourhood centres, community language schools and migrant resource centres in New South Wales that need volunteers to assist with their multicultural programs. The CRC also provides information on multicultural events and activities that offer excellent opportunities for volunteers to learn about other cultures and promote inter-cultural exchange.

You can also search the NSW Government’s Local Council Search  to identify volunteering opportunities to assist diverse cultural groups in your local area.

You can also check The Centre for Volunteering for current volunteer opportunities.

Note: you might have to use key words (e.g, Italian, Refugees) to assist with your search.
