Becoming a Volunteer

How do I become a volunteer?

If you already know what area of volunteering you are interested then browse through the topics listed under Types of Volunteering Activities. There may be one specific area that you are interested in or you may prefer to divide your time between several types of volunteering.

If you want help in identifying the interests and skills you would like to offer as a volunteer then go to the All About Volunteering page of the NSW Centre for Volunteering website.

Local Councils and volunteering

Many local councils have information about community volunteering on their websites. Go to your local council’s website and search for 'volunteer' using their own site’s search functionality.

Visit NSW Community Builders  website to find out if there is a Volunteering Referral Centre near you. These centres are a good starting point for finding out more about local volunteer opportunities. If there is no referral centre near you, then telephone your local community or neighbourhood centre to enquire about volunteering.

To find out who your local council is, go to the NSW Government’s Local Council Search . This page will be able to identify all the local councils in NSW.

You can also do a Google search using key words such as volunteer, the name of your town, and Australia e.g. volunteer Gosford Australia.
